AI Agents Overview
Agents are the core of Votel. They are intelligent virtual assistants that communicate with your customers through voice, SMS, or chat -- handling complete conversations automatically, just like a trained team member.
What Are Agents?
An agent is an AI-powered assistant that can call leads, answer incoming queries, schedule appointments, send follow-ups, and manage entire conversations on your behalf. Each agent operates independently and can be tailored to a specific role within your business.
Agents combine several components to function:
- System prompt -- defines the agent's personality, rules, and knowledge
- AI model -- powers the agent's understanding and responses
- Voice -- determines how the agent sounds on calls
- Workflow -- controls the logic and steps the agent follows

- Knowledge base -- provides business-specific information for accurate answers
- Integrations -- connects the agent to your CRM, calendar, and other tools
Agent Types
Votel supports several agent types depending on your use case:
- Inbound -- answers incoming calls and messages from customers
- Outbound -- proactively makes calls and sends campaigns to leads
- Support -- handles customer service inquiries, troubleshooting, and FAQs
- Sales -- qualifies leads, pitches products or services, and books appointments
You can run multiple agents simultaneously, each handling a different function for your business.
How Agents Work
When a conversation starts, the agent follows this process:
- Receives input -- a call comes in, a message arrives, or a campaign triggers
- Processes context -- the AI model reads the system prompt, conversation history, and any relevant knowledge base data
- Generates a response -- the model produces a reply based on its instructions and the current conversation
- Delivers the response -- the reply is spoken aloud (voice), sent as text (SMS/chat), or sent as an email
- Executes actions -- the agent can book appointments, update CRM records, transfer calls, or trigger workflows as needed
Full Customization
Every agent is fully configurable. You control:
- Name and identity -- who the agent is and how it introduces itself
- Personality and style -- tone, formality, and communication approach
- AI model -- which language model powers the conversation
- Voice -- provider, accent, speed, and expressiveness
- Channels -- phone numbers, SMS, and email
- Workflow -- the step-by-step logic the agent follows
- Knowledge base -- uploaded documents and websites for reference
- Integrations -- connected tools and platforms
