How do I bill clients for usage of a custom service, such as support minutes?

The SaaS plan does the billing, and a workflow records how much was used.

  1. In your SaaS plan, add the custom service (for example Premium Support per minute) and set the included amount (for example 100 minutes) and the price for going over (for example $1 per minute).
  2. Build a workflow with the trigger that matches the usage, such as Call Ended for support minutes, or a social media post trigger for posts.
  3. Add the Meter usage based billing step, choose the custom service and set it to debit an amount.
  4. Use a variable for the amount. A call duration is in seconds, so add a simple math step first (duration divided by 60) and use its output, the number of minutes, as the amount.

The step only tells the service how much was used. You can debit usage or add credit back. The plan bills what is included and what goes over, using the built in wallet when there is a cost. The step reports whether it succeeded, for example when the client has no funds, so you can add two paths and send an alert on failure.

This works with any service you create, such as websites designed, support minutes, social media accounts connected or social posts per month; change the trigger to match.

If you only want to track a number on a contact rather than bill it, create a custom field with the data type Metered number (for example Support minutes) and increase or decrease it.
