How do I quickly create an AI receptionist agent from a business website?
The fastest way to create an agent is to start from a website.
- In the left menu, click AI Agents.
- Click Create an agent. You can start from a website, from a use case or from scratch.
- Choose Start with a website and enter the business website address. When building for a client, use the client's website.
- Click Analyze website.
- In about 20 to 30 seconds the AI crawls the site, learns the business and builds an AI receptionist. It writes the system prompt, gives the agent a name and personality, and adds facts about the business and FAQs taken from the website.
- Click Test to talk to the agent by voice and hear how it sounds. Test mode also works for chat.
It works out of the box with no settings to change, so it makes a strong demo: when a prospect hears the AI answer the phone with their own business name, that wins them over. Afterwards you can edit the prompt, facts and FAQs and change the voice, model, language and instructions. There is no charge to create an agent, and you can create as many as you want. It works with any website wherever it is hosted. If you are building your website at the same time, finish the website first.
If the agent does not pick up the facts it should, the crawl may have failed. Some sites block crawlers, for example with Cloudflare, and sites with very little text give few facts. In that case copy the text from the website into the AI assistant, ask it to generate FAQs, and paste those FAQs and a short description of the business into the agent, or write the facts yourself.
For a live agent, do not rely only on what was learned from the website. Websites are large, so if the AI says something unexpected it is hard to trace where it came from. Add your own curated information and guardrails to the agent.
What comes next:
- A new agent is not on any channel. Turn on the channels you want (phone number, SMS, email, social media, website widget) from the Channels drop down on the agent.
- Out of the box the agent can only talk. Give it tools, for example a calendar, so it can book appointments. It cannot book real appointments until a calendar is connected.
You can also skip the website and ask the AI assistant to create an agent, for example an AI receptionist for a dental office, with the office name. It builds the agent and its conversation workflow, including the greeting, booking, cancelling and rescheduling appointments, answering questions, insurance or billing, emergencies, hours and directions, and taking a message. If you give little detail, it fills in the blanks with its own assumptions, so describe the business and the call flow you want as fully as you can. You do not need to know how to code, map workflows or write prompts.
