How much does it cost to build a website with the AI assistant, and do I pay monthly to keep it online?

Building with the AI assistant is charged in credits at $0.25 each. The cost depends on how big the site is, how long the AI thinks and how detailed your request is, and the same prompt can give different results at different costs. As a guide, an average website costs about 6 to 10 credits, sometimes more or less. Examples: a dental website from a single prompt used 7.5 credits, a simple roofing agency landing page used 5.9 credits (a little under $1.50), a seven-day roofing reminder workflow used 3.9 credits (under $1), and one simple site used 1.2 credits while the same prompt run again used 6.9 credits.

That is only the cost of the AI building it, not an ongoing charge. There is no hosting cost: you get unlimited websites and unlimited hosting for you and all of your sub-accounts. The AI only uses credits when you talk to it, so if you do not talk to it there is no cost. You can see what a turn cost with the info button at the bottom of the chat. Custom web apps that have their own database and custom code are different: they are $9 a month per app.

On the $297 Founders plan, the $297 of AI assistant credits included every month covers this building. Your overall monthly cost depends on your usage, for example how many emails and texts you send and how many websites you build.
