What is the difference between a plan and an add-on, and how do I create an add-on?
There are two types of SaaS plan. You choose the type with the switcher when you click Create a plan, and it shows in the Type column of the plans list.
A plan (also called a package) is the customer's main subscription. A customer can have only one plan at a time. If a customer on your Silver plan buys your Gold plan, Silver is cancelled and Gold is activated, so buying a plan works as an upgrade or downgrade.
An add-on is an extra. A customer can have as many add-ons as you want on top of their plan, and an add-on can also be held without a plan. Typical add-ons are social media management, database reactivation, review generation, Google Business Profile optimization, ad management, website redesign, SEO and AI engine optimization.
To create an add-on:
- Go to Settings, then SaaS Configurator, then SaaS Plans, and click Create a plan.
- Use the switcher to choose Add-on and give it a clear name.
- On the pricing tab, set its price, usually monthly, with or without a setup fee. You can create a monthly and an annual option for the same offer.
- On the Service usage and pricing tab, note that every service starts switched off for an add-on. Turn on only what it adds. An add-on can raise a limit (for example the plan allows one AI agent and the add-on allows 10, or more contacts or minutes, or unlimited), or it can switch on a custom service such as Social Media Management.
- To set up the add-on's system automatically, link a snapshot to it. When the customer buys the add-on, the snapshot is loaded into their account.
If an add-on is marked customer visible, customers see it in their own account under Settings, then Billing, with the available plans, and can buy it themselves, which is a sales opportunity.
We recommend one base plan for the core offer most businesses in your niche want (for example a 24/7 AI receptionist) and at least three add-ons for the extras, built around your snapshots. Start a client with one or two services and offer the next add-on a month or two later, walking them up the value ladder.
