Campaigns
A campaign is one email plus the audience it goes to. This page covers writing one, choosing how it goes out, and reading the numbers afterwards.
Start from Email Campaigns → Campaigns → New campaign.
Details & Audience
The first section names the campaign and picks who receives it.
- Campaign name — for you, not your readers. Recipients never see it. Something like "August product update" works.
- Subject line — the line people see in their inbox. This one they do see.
- Preview text — the short line most inboxes show right after the subject. Use it to add to the subject, not repeat it.
- Send from — which email sender the mail goes out through.
- Reply-to address — where replies land. Leave it empty and replies go to the sender address.
- Send to — one or more lists or segments.
Under Send to you get a live count, for example "About 4,200 contacts will receive this". It is an estimate, because people can unsubscribe or bounce between now and the send.
The picker has a Create a list shortcut. See Lists & Segments for the difference between a list and a segment.
Content
Write the email in one of two editors. You choose with the toggle at the top of the Content section.
- Text editor — a normal rich-text box. Type, format, add links and images. Best for a plain, personal-looking email.
- Visual builder — a drag-and-drop designer for laid-out emails with columns, buttons, and images. Use Start designing the first time and Edit design after that.
Both editors can insert merge fields from the toolbar, so an email can open with the reader's first name.
A simple text-style email frequently gets more replies than a heavily designed one. If you are not sure, send the plain version.
Audience Quality
Under the audience picker sits a small meter that checks who is actually on your selected lists.
It tells you the total, and it warns you when too much of the audience has stopped opening. The warning is worth taking seriously: sending to people who never open teaches mailbox providers to filter you.
Quick audiences
Instead of building a segment by hand, you can click a preset. Each one saves a new segment with the matching engagement rule and adds it to your audience. You can edit it afterwards like any other segment.
| Quick audience | Who it means |
|---|---|
| Most engaged | Contacts who clicked or replied in the last 30 days. |
| Everyone active | Everyone who engaged recently, plus contacts who are still new. |
| Everyone except dormant | The whole list minus the contacts who stopped opening. |
| Win-back | Only the contacts who cooled off, to try to bring them back. |
Presets are for sends you aim yourself. When you choose Email Agent under Delivery, the presets are hidden and the quality meter moves down into the Delivery panel — because the agent is the one picking who inside your lists gets the email.
Delivery
The Delivery section answers one question: how does this go out? Pick one of three.
| Choice | What it does |
|---|---|
| Send now | Goes out to your selected lists immediately. Everyone, at once. |
| Schedule | The same send, at a date and time you pick. Times are in your local timezone. |
| Email Agent | The agent decides who inside your lists gets it, how many, and when. |
The button at the bottom changes to match: Send now, Schedule campaign, or Hand to the email agent. If a campaign is already queued, the button becomes Remove from queue.
Send test mails a copy to any address you choose. It turns on once the campaign has a subject and some content. Check it on a phone as well as a desktop — most people read email on a phone.
Extra options when you choose Email Agent
Picking Email Agent reveals three settings that only matter to the agent:
- Evergreen content — the email stays true over time. Only evergreen emails are reused to win contacts back.
- Content expires (optional) — a date and time after which the campaign is never sent or reused. Leave it empty for no expiry. Use it for offers with a deadline.
- Eligible for automatic re-sends — lets the agent reuse this email later to win back contacts who stopped engaging.
Once queued, the campaign shows its place in line, for example "In the email agent's queue · position 2".
The Checklist
Above the button, the composer lists anything still standing between your campaign and sending. Fix every item and the button turns on.
| Item you may see | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| Add a subject before sending. | Fill in the subject line. |
| Add some content before sending. | Write something in the editor. |
| Choose an email sender before sending. | Pick a sender under Send from. |
| Choose at least one list before sending. | Pick a list or segment under Send to. |
| Pick a date and time before scheduling. | Only for Schedule — set the moment. |
| Use the built-in email sender | Only for Email Agent — see below. A Switch sender button fixes it in one click. |
The agent's timing, warmup, and per-contact send times only work on the platform's own email accounts. A sender you connected yourself (your own SendGrid or SES, for example) supports none of it, so a campaign queued on one would quietly do less than promised. The composer blocks it rather than letting you find out tomorrow.
The agent also needs at least one list. It does not invent an audience — it decides who inside the lists you chose gets the email, how many, and when.
The business address warning
Separately from the checklist, you may see a reminder to add your business address in Settings. Marketing email is required by law to carry a postal address, and it appears in every footer. This is a warning rather than a block, but do not ignore it.
Reply Actions
The composer has a second tab, Reply actions. It lets the agent read replies to this campaign and act on them — tag the contact, answer with a template, hand the conversation to an AI agent, or unsubscribe them.
It is a big enough topic to have its own page. See Reply actions.
Campaign Status
Every campaign carries one status.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | Not sent, still editable. |
| Scheduled | Waiting for its send time. |
| Sending | Going out right now. |
| Sent | Finished. |
| Cancelled | Stopped before sending. |
| Failed | Something went wrong. |
| In the agent's queue | Handed to the email agent. |
Once a campaign is sending or sent, it can no longer be edited. Use Duplicate to make a changed copy.
Reading the Stats
Open a sent campaign to see its report, under the heading Performance. Six numbers, each with the percentage under it. In one plain sentence each:
- Sent — how many emails were handed to the mail system.
- Delivered — how many the receiving mail servers accepted.
- Opened — how many people opened the email.
- Clicked — how many people clicked a link inside it.
- Bounced — how many could not be delivered at all. A bad address, or a full or closed mailbox.
- Unsubscribed — how many asked to stop receiving your email.
The campaigns list adds one more, which the single-campaign report does not show:
- Click-to-open — of the people who opened, what share also clicked. This separates two different questions: did the subject line work (opens), and did the email itself work (click-to-open)?
While a campaign is going out you also get a progress line, for example "1,204 sent · 3 failed · 18 skipped".
Skipped contacts are the ones deliberately left out: they opted out, they bounced before, or they are on a do-not-email list. Skipping them protects you.
Below the numbers you get a Delivery funnel chart and a Recipients table showing each address with its status and the times it was sent, opened, and clicked.
Open rate tells you if your subject line is working. Click-to-open tells you if the email itself is working. Bounces and unsubscribes tell you if your list is healthy. Watch all four over time rather than obsessing over one send.
